BodhgayaMahabodhi Mahavihara is one of the earliest Buddhist Temple having maximum number of ancient artistic monuments built over centuries since the time of Emperor Asoka and later periods.
The Mahabodhi Temple, Vajrasana and the Bodhi Tree are the main objects of worship around which  a  monumental body of artistic creations in the form of stone railings, stone and stucco panels, fine images, votive stupas , shrines, chaityas, inscriptions have been erected over the years, representing the highest form of devotion as reflected in their artistic excellence. Many of the motifs, which are  carved in chiseled perfection
on these monuments, are filled with iconographic symbolism and also  represent different aspect of the tenets of Buddhism.
With sincere intent, through this book, Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee has endeavoured to unravel the artistic mastery of innumerable geniuses, devotees, sculptors and artisans of yore and Thus,
have paid a tribute to their spiritual devotion and made it
possible to have a glance at these hidden treasures. One of the important facets of the
book is the chapter on inscriptions found on different monuments. It is hoped that some day these will be deciphered by the experts.
